Job Description:

The Reference and Instructional Librarian works as a member of a team of professional librarians to provide reference and research assistance to the members of the Emmanuel community, including via telephone, chat, online and in-person.  The librarian also participates in providing formal and informal information literacy instruction in a variety of subject areas. The role also assists with the development and maintenance of research guides and other materials on the library web site; performing some technical service duties supporting departmental activities; overseeing and assist student worker supervisors when more senior librarians are not available, and participating in presentations, exhibits and special projects.

This is an academic year contract position, renewable annually. The contract is for a total of 34 weeks during Emmanuel’s academic year beginning in late August (one week before the start of the Fall Term) and running through mid-May, with time off between the Fall and Spring Terms. Weekly hours will typically consist of four 8-hour shifts with one-hour breaks; hours may include some evening and/or weekend hours. A regular schedule of hours will be determined in advance for the entire contract period. 


Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have substantial knowledge, skills, and facility with both print and electronic information resources; the ability to provide engaging information literacy instruction under the supervision of the Associate Librarian for Reference, Instruction, and Outreach; interest in and facility with new technologies; the ability to work successfully in a team environment and independently; the ability to work effectively with a diverse body of students and faculty; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and the ability to contribute meaningfully to special projects.

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited institution, or an MLS candidate, in the last semester of course work who has completed coursework in reference and/or has substantial library reference experience; 
  • 1-2 years experience in a customer service role, preferably in a library; 
  • Teaching experience;
