Statement of Duties

The Rogers Free Library is seeking a creative, entrepreneurial, forward-thinking, and community-focused professional librarian to fill the position of Adult Services Librarian.  The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of professional library principles, practices, and services, as well as a broad background and knowledge in marketing, public programming, and social media.

This position requires flexibility, the ability to adapt quickly to technology, and a thorough knowledge of print and online resources.  Individuals will be responsible for planning and executing programs for adults at the Rogers Free Library, including marketing and promotion of events and services. This position reports to the Library Director.

Essential Functions

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Plan and implement a variety of library programs for adults and occasionally for teens.
  • Work with colleagues to determine the scheduling of adult programs and to ensure programs are included in online calendars.
  • Produce a monthly email newsletter/e-mail blast of library events using Mail Chimp.
  • Promote library programs in-house (small save-the-date slips for patrons to take, talking to patrons about programs, posting flyers in the elevator, on bulletin board, etc.), online (library’s website, Facebook, Instagram, etc.), and at community events.
  • Update the Library website by creating, reviewing, and editing its content. Ensure that the content is appropriately written and formatted. Participate in any updates or potential re-design of the library website.
  • Assist with the operation of public service desks to include the registration of new patrons, book reserves, and checking in and out all materials.
  • Attend professional library conferences, seminars, and network committees; read professional literature; attend and actively participate in staff and department head meeting discussions.
  • Provide information and assistance to library patrons. Receive complaints or special requests from library users, and makes every effort to follow through in response to them; maintain quality public relations, advising patrons of library programs, procedures and policies.
  • Able to help patrons with technology and troubleshoot issues with computers, printers, scanners, and mobile devices such as iPads or eReaders.
  • Able to help teach patrons how to use the library’s online resources including instructing patrons on how to download eBooks and audiobooks.
  • Supervise library staff and manages the building in the absence of administration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Abilities, Skills, and Knowledge Required

  • Promoting library services through social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, newsletters, and the library website.
  • How to plan and implement a variety of one-time and ongoing adult programs that appeal to our patrons.
  • Library policies and procedures, including automated circulation systems and information technology.
  • Circulation department operations.
  • Adult fiction and non-fiction books and DVDs.
  • Computer applications and how to troubleshoot common problems, including MS Office, Sierra, and EnvisionWare.
  • Work independently.
  • Handle a great many details, often simultaneously, with accuracy and composure.
  • Communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in writing.
  • Present a friendly, pleasant personality with a sincere love of working with people.
  • Research information for a wide variety of library users.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members in a supportive team atmosphere.

Minimum Qualifications/Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Master’s in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution;
  • At least one year as a professional or para-professional librarian;
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Demonstrated experience with MS Office, Sierra, EnvisionWare, Constant Contact, or similar platforms.
  • A genuine desire and ability to interact pleasantly and effectively with the public is essential.
  • Must be able to lift/move/carry up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • Usual office working conditions. Potential minimal exposure to noise, dust, inclement weather, temperature fluctuations.
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, and talk for potentially long periods of time. This includes using a computer monitor, monitor(s), keyboard, and mouse to complete many of the daily tasks as well as usual office equipment.

Terms of Employment

This is a $45,000 per year, full-time, non-union position with 37.5 hours minimum per week.  This includes some nights and weekends e.g. for programming and outreach.  This position will follow the Town of Bristol Employee Handbook and the Non-Union Employee Benefits Summary.
