The Ipswich Public Library, located in the heart of historic Ipswich, MA, is looking for an energetic, collaborative Library Director with a passion for public service. Working closely with the Town Administration and Board of Library Trustees, the Director oversees and monitors all library operations, including budgeting, strategic planning and service delivery, personnel management, and facilities management. The Director should be an ambassador for the library, highlighting its successes and communicating its needs.

Having undergone many service enhancements in the last few years, the Ipswich Public Library is poised to move forward with robust community programming and innovative services to meet community needs, and seeks an innovative leader who can guide the organization toward a post-pandemic world and balance the need for both virtual and in-person services and resources.

This position requires a comprehensive knowledge of public library and general management principles, methods, materials, practices, and public library finance; library procedures and problems; the ability to analyze library service needs and participate effectively in solving them; plan and supervise the work of diverse staff; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Board of Trustees, government officials, staff, patrons, and the general public.

This position requires a Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school and extensive library experience, including 5-7 years of supervisory experience. The Director should be knowledgeable about technology and its use in libraries and be able to manage a facility and staff of 16, with an annual budget of $800,000. The successful candidate will also have experience with fundraising efforts and collaborate closely with the Friends of the Ipswich Public Library.

The Town of Ipswich is a coastal town in Essex County, Massachusetts with a population of 13,176. A residential community with a vibrant tourism industry, the town is famous for its clams, green space, and for Crane Beach, a barrier beach near the Crane estate. Ipswich was incorporated as a town in 1634 and is rich in history, having more “First Period” houses (1625-1725) than any other community in America.
