Circulation Associate (Part-Time), Merrimac Public Library, Merrimac, MA

This is a 24/hr per week position. $17.19/hr now, $17.53/hr July 1.   Prorated benefits.

Current hours are: Monday: 10-4  Tuesday: 1-7  Wednesday: 10-5  Thursday: 10-3 (there is some flexibility).

The Merrimac Public Library is seeking a Circulation Associate to join our professional and friendly team. The Circulation Associate is responsible for all circulation desk tasks such as: check-in/check-out, book drop, ILL bin, item pull lists. In addition, the Associate will use patron interactions as a chance to inform library users of new library services, show them how to use basic features of the catalog, explain what is available on the website, and assist patrons with copier/scanner/computers and basic help with email/Google/Microsoft Office. 

Position Purpose:                             

The purpose of this position is to perform circulation and administrative work to support the operations of the Circulation Desk in the Library. Performs all other related work as required.   

Supervision: 

Supervision Scope:  Performs varied routine but responsible for library functions, according to prescribed procedures, requiring attention to detail, accuracy, initiative and reliability.

Supervision Received:  Work is performed under the general direction of the Library Director. Work is performed independently requesting assistance with unusual situations which do not have clear precedents.

Supervision Given: None 

Job Environment: 

Work is performed under typical library conditions; under some stress, with moderate noise level. 

Regularly operates computers and peripherals, telephone, copier, printer/scanner, fax machine and other standard office equipment.  

Has frequent contacts with the general public and library staff. Contacts are in person, in writing, and by telephone and usually involve the provision of information to the public or interested parties. 

Some regular evening and/or weekend hours possible.  

Errors could result in delay of service and adverse public relations. 

Essential Functions:

Provides technical and clerical support services at the Library Circulation Desk; welcomes patrons to the library with a positive tone; answers basic reference questions and directs patrons to desired materials. 

Responsible for all circulation services: check materials in and out, empty book drop, empty ILL delivery bins, process new patron cards, assist patrons with their accounts, place holds and renew items for patrons. 

Assists with shelving materials in the adult area of the library. 

Responsible for meeting room schedule, sign-up patrons, ensures that policies and procedures are followed.  

Sorts incoming mail and adds new periodicals to the database. 

Assists patrons with the computers, copiers, printers, and sends faxes for patrons. 

Informs patrons of new features of the catalog or library services. 

Shows patrons how to use basic features of the catalog:  place a hold, set-up an account, renew an item, find readers advisory and other available resources on the website. 

Retrieves pull list, locates materials and sends to respective destinations. 

Answers telephones and responds to routine inquiries or refer callers to appropriate personnel. Takes and relays messages.  

Attends and represents Merrimac at the MVLC Circulation Meetings, learns about changes to circulation policies and procedures, relays that information to other library staff. 

Keeps the circulation desk area clean and organized. 

Makes suggestions to improve efficiency or quality of service. 

Creates book displays. 

Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates. 

While this requires excellent customer service and technology skills, the ability to interact with the public in a patient, kind and friendly manner is paramount. The position is part of a supportive team and helps to create the environment of a welcoming library for all.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience: 

High School education required; 2 years college level education preferred. At least two years of experience working with the public, preferably in a library setting, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 

Knowledge, Ability and Skill: 

Knowledge:  Thorough knowledge of office procedures, practices and terminology. Knowledge of office equipment and the operation of computer software applications. High level of competency with email, Microsoft word, basic social media, and learning new technology.  

Ability:  Ability to communicate effectively verbally. Ability to multi-task effectively and work within time- lines. Comfortable with unpredictable changes in routines, flexibility in daily routine when needed. Ability to respond with tact and courtesy when assisting the with the public.  

Skill: Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Skill in operating computers, utilizing appropriate software applications, and troubleshooting basic computer problems. Skill using the above listed tools and equipment.

Regularly required to walk distances, stand for extended periods of time, sit, talk, and hear; operate objects, tools, or controls; pick up paper, files, and other common office objects. Ability to view computer screens and work with details for extended periods of time.  Ability to operate a keyboard and calculator at an efficient speed. May move objects weighing up to 40lbs. Must be able to communicate
