Temporary Archivist for Private Family Collection, East Blue Hill, Maine [CLOSED]

Seeking a graduate student or recent graduate student to inventory the personal collection of the noted
author, consultant, and speaker Suzanne Massie, Russian historian and advisor to President Ronald
Reagan. This is project-based with a duration of approximately two weeks. This is a paid opportunity,
with housing provided on site.
The ideal candidate is organized and resourceful, with a keen attention to detail, and possesses
excellent communication skills. The project involves inventorying letters, papers, manuscripts, poetry,
photographs, audio recordings and various other paper materials. There will be the need to note the
presence of duplicates.
Suzanne Massie’s goal is to sell the archival material to an interested university institute for research
and study. Therefore, precise descriptions of the most important materials, date range, the extent of
and the amount of material (in linear feet) will need to be determined.
A detailed catalogue of Ms. Massie’s extensive library of books has already been completed, which may
need to be sorted, with a subset of the library collection segregated, but this work would be secondary
to the archiving and cataloguing of the archival materials in the collection.

Description of Project Role:

  • Inventory and organize materials
  • Sort, label and prepare materials for sale
  • Create directories and database for a presentation to potential buyers
  • Qualifications:
  • Enrollment in or recent completion of a Masters-level program in library science, archival
    studies, museum studies or related program
  • Experience working with physical archival materials
  • Interest in and experience with multiple archival materials including paper, audio recordings,
    photographs
  • Strong detail and follow-up skills
  • Curious nature and self-motivated
  • Completion of LIS 438, LIS 440, and LIS 442 preferred.
  • Knowledge of Russian language extremely helpful, but not a requirement
  • Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift/push/pull boxes of books and documents
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting and stooping
  • Housing:
  • Archivist will stay at Massie’s currently unoccupied 3-bedroom home in East Blue Hill, Maine.
    The home features 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, with spectacular views over Penobscot Bay and a
    5-minute walk to a public beach. Archives are stored in climate-controlled basement rooms.
    Office space is also provided.
  • Those with cat allergies should be aware that there is a cat in the home.
