Library Associate (Part-Time), Whately Public Library, Whately, MA

Description:

Position summary – Provides customer service and general assistance to support the daily
operation of the library. Work includes checking library materials into and out from the library,
processing interlibrary loans, searching for library materials for patrons, shelving and processing
of new library materials.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
a. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or
b. Any equivalent combination of education and experience
c. Previous library experience desired, experience with Evergreen circulation system preferred

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Charges, renews and discharges circulating library materials using Evergreen; registering new
patrons; interprets and enforces library policies and procedures to the public.
Opening and closing library procedures.
Answers telephone calls and email messages and provides information or otherwise assists
patrons.
Provides patrons assistance with basic personal computing skills to include Internet use and
using the online catalog
Assists with Collection Maintenance

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in person and by phone. Ability to work effectively
with patrons of all ages and interest. Working knowledge of library operations and ability to
type and complete data entry on computers. Ability to maintain accuracy in record keeping
Must be able to work with a high degree of self-direction and independence.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
The position requires the ability to operate standard office equipment including but not limited
to public and circulation computers, Microsoft word, telephone, and copy machine.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to stand, sit, walk, stoop and reach with hands and arms. Must be able to kneel,
bend, push and pull objects. Must be able to lift or move up to 10 pounds.


WORK SCHEDULE
The work schedule would be fairly regular with approximately 15 hours a week. The schedule
would be as follows T&W 3-8 and Sat 10-3. Some flexibility preferred to cover times when
Director is unavailable. This is a non-benefited position.

SELECTION GUIDELINES
The successful candidate will be chosen by the Library Director and approved by the Library
Trustees through the hiring procedures set forth in the Town’s Personnel Policies and
Procedures.
