Position Title: Instruction and Outreach Specialist (Program Specialist I)                                    

Position Number: C2R0004                                                                  

SCOPE OF WORK: Delivers exemplary library and outreach services focusing on a strong customer service philosophy and the anticipation of user needs. This position reports to the Coordinator of Learning Commons Resources at NHTI, Concord’s Community College

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Provides research and reference assistance as well as library outreach services to the NHTI community;
  • Instructs students, faculty, staff, and community members in the use of print and digital resources;
  • Provides group library instruction to students, faculty, staff and the general publicas needed;
  • In conjunction with the Coordinator, coordinates library item displays, exhibits, and library programming and events, such as the Career Talks series with NHTI alumni and affiliates;
  • In conjunction with the Coordinator, seeks out and maintains community partnerships with an eye toward Innovation Lab programming, which identifies opportunities for experiential learning between local business/organizations and current students;
  • Assists with item circulation, patron registration, and patron account maintenance;
  • Uses a computer for various functions including circulation, mail, information retrieval, record keeping, database management, etc.;
  • Provides patrons with in depth one-on-one assistance in using computer applications including – but not limited to – Microsoft Office, Canvas, e-mail, and web browsers;
  • Updates the Library’s online research guides as needed;
  • Assists with item acquisitions and processing;
  • Supervises the Library during some afternoon, evening and weekend hours;
  • Participates in staff meetings/planning;
  • Light housekeeping cleaning of furniture, shelves, books, and equipment
  • Opens and/or closes the Library, enabling all machine, lights, etc.;
  • Represents the college at conferences, meeting and seminars;
  • Complies with all college, system, state and federal rules and regulations;
  • Other duties as assigned


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in library science, education, English, communications, or a related field.  Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

Experience: Two years of professional or paraprofessional experience in library services, education, and/or community outreach. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Familiarity with ACRL standards, guidelines, and frameworks for information literacy; Experience teaching and preparing lesson plans; Proficiency with electronic and printed information resources; Ability to use and explain library facilities including OPAC and other reference aids; Customer service skills with a strong commitment to client services; Strong creative, technical, and problem solving skills; Excellent communication, organizational, presentation and interpersonal skill; Understanding of standards and trends in reference services and instructional technology.

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Considerable knowledge of library data and cataloging rules. Considerable knowledge of modern library methods and procedures. Considerable knowledge of children, youth and adult literature and ability to utilize this knowledge to match interests of clientele, and to advise in the selection of books and other materials. Ability to answer librarians’ and public’s requests for reference material. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, local librarians, boards of trustees, educators and the general public. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the college appointing authority.
