The Per Diem Substitute Reference Librarians will provide coverage on a substitute basis as needed at the library’s reference desk. If needed, coverage assistance may occasionally be requested at other service points in the library. Services provided include a wide variety of information and reader’s advisory services and instruction to library users in the use of library resources and technology. Responsible for assisting library users with public access computers and the ILS system (Evergreen). The Adult Services Librarian may assign other small projects as needed/as time permits. As normal library hours resume, this position will also participate in the regular Saturday rotation (6 – 6.5 hours every 3 – 4 weeks).

Per Diem Substitute Reference Librarian Qualifications:

  • Equivalent to Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited program or students close to completion of MLS (within 1 year) and public library or reference desk experience. More than 1 years public library or reference desk preferred.
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to communicate and work effectively with other staff and library patrons of all ages.
  • Comfortable helping library users with the Internet, electronic library resources, computers, and other technology.

Hiring Salary: $21.81 hourly

Hours: Varied as this position primarily provides coverage in absence of regularly scheduled staff.

 Hopkinton Public Library is currently open on weekdays only, including two evenings.

Post-COVID, hours will expand to include additional evenings as well as Saturdays and Sundays.

Substitutes may be called upon to  work during any of the library open hours.
