Head of Circulation, Hampstead Public Library, Hampstead, NH

This position is part-time; between 20 and 25 hours per week.  Monday – 9:00am-5:00pm; Wednesday –  9:00an-5:00pm and Friday – 9:00am-4:00pm; two Saturdays a month – 9:00am-1:00pm.  Once COVID restrictions are lifted and the Library is back to normal hours, the schedule will change and include one evening a week and 2 Saturdays a month.

Job Summary:  Responsible for overseeing the entire library circulation function. Provides information services to the community by facilitating access to library resources including preparing materials and services; circulating materials; assisting patrons; answering reference questions; organizing materials, interpreting library policy for patrons, assigning tasks to library pages and volunteers, establishing and administering procedures for operation of the circulation desk and training Library Assistants/Pages. Provides Collection Development accessioning and deaccessioning for adult fiction and large print books, books on CD, as well as all adult DVDs, periodicals and newspapers.

Major Duties:

  • Uses automated library system to circulate materials to library users; reserve materials; set up new patron accounts; establish procedures for all circulation activity.
  • Responsible for the appearance, selection, ordering and assessment of adult collections; the new book section, adult DVDs, fiction, large print, books on CD, newspaper and periodicals.
  • Help patrons locate library materials or online information and assists them with digital media, computer issues, and electronic devices.
  • Assist in the ordering of materials form other libraries, processing materials for shipment as well as received materials.
  • Coordinates dates of book displays
  • Orders supplies as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and level of competency associated with some college. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the job, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION: 

Excellent customer service attitude. Knowledge of library practices and procedures. Skill in using automated library systems.  Excellent computer skills and ability to adapt to new software programs. Skill in using electronic equipment. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff, patrons and volunteers. Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes day, night and weekend hours as well as the ability to provide coverage for other shifts when available. Skill in the use of software such as Libby, Atriuum, Microsoft Word, Google, etc. and the ability to multitask.
