Music Librarian, Royal Opera House Muscat’s Cultural Center, Muscat, Oman

Under the direct supervision of the Director, the Cultural Center at the Royal Opera House Muscat is seeking a Music Library Manager to oversee the establishment of a brand-new music library in Muscat, the capital of Oman. This position will be effective immediately. This cultural initiative will complement the existing state-of-the art Royal Opera House Muscat and will be the first of its kind in the region. The Music Library Manager will be responsible for formulating and implementing collection development, acquisitions, cataloging, and usage policies, in addition to developing an education and outreach program. Working with the Director, the Music Library Manager will be responsible for identifying a broad range of music materials pertaining to regional (Omani and Arab), Western, and World Music in support of the mission of the Cultural Center.

Although the library will focus on digital materials, it will include a physical collection including scores, books, and recordings representing the Western musical canon. Central to the library will be online subscriptions to audio, video, and text databases supporting the study of music and musicians. A special section will be reserved for children. The library will include temporary exhibitions complementing the programs of the Royal Opera House Muscat and identify relevant symposiums, conferences, workshops, and educational projects that support the mission of the Center. The Royal Opera House Muscat offers a competitive salary based on qualifications and experience. We also provide generous allowances for vacation, sick leave, professional development, and offer coverage for local health insurance. Initial contract is for 2 years with the possibility of extension.

Education and Abilities:

  • MLS or Musicology from an accredited library school or the equivalent in training and experience. Advanced graduate work in the field of music or musicology is required; a Ph.D. is highly desirable. 
  • Substantial knowledge of and/or experience in libraries or a music library are required.
  • Strong background in music, musicology, and understanding of collection development in academic or research libraries.
  • Knowledge and experience of archival description and arrangement, and sound recordings.
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly publications, and presentation preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, supervise, and train young staff.

Post and Responsibilities:

  • A 2-year contract for the position of a Music Library Manager at the Cultural Center of the Royal Opera House Muscat, Oman
  • Work closely with the Director to establish, develop, plan, organize, and build collections for the Music Library
  • Establish the identity of the library; its niche, collections, and acquisitions
  • Maintain records and catalogue acquisitions
  • Establish a system for audio-visual archiving of past performances from the Royal Opera House Muscat
  • Establish online links to other music library e-books, recordings, and databases (Naxos, JSTOR, New Grove Online, Smithsonian Global Sound, etc.)
  • Identify and collaborate with relevant local, regional, and international organizations and institutions
  • Interview, hire, and train future staff
