The Library/Learning Commons & Technology Specialist provides teachers and students with a media center environment containing a wide variety and range of materials that will challenge intellectual growth, and aid students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media center resources.  As part of the library media program this position will focus on technology skills development based on the AASL (American Association of School Librarians) and ISTE (International Society on Technology & Education) standards to ensure students gain the foundational skills needed to succeed in the Middle and Upper school programs and beyond. This position will play a large role in King’s commitment to becoming a premier research institution. The belief that students should be able to think, create, share and grow will be the primary focus and core of the instruction in our Lower School library media program.

Responsibilities:

  • Operates and supervises the Learning Commons/media center and computer lab.
  • Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media center materials, and instructs teachers and students on the use of the system.
  • Teaches technology classes to enrich students learning with a focus on promoting good digital citizenship, technology skills, and information literacy skills.
  • Creates and develops lessons to foster an engaging classroom environment for all students.
  • Assists faculty in the selection of books and other instructional materials, and makes media center materials available to supplement the instructional program.
  • Evaluates, selects and requests new media center materials. Informs teachers of new materials.
  • Works cooperatively with teachers in planning interdisciplinary units integrating library and technology skills with a focus on STEAM styled instructional methodologies.
  • Works with teachers in planning assignments encompassing library media and technology skills integrated with the school’s curriculum and presents materials with classes when studying a particular subject.
  • Supports Makerspace and Innovation Lab initiatives.
  • Maintains an environment conducive to good learning.
  • Works cooperatively with the Directors of Teaching and Learning in providing reading guidance to all students including those who have learning accommodations or distinct intellectual interests.
  • Arranges frequently changing book-related displays and exhibits most likely to interest students.
  • Facilitate cross-functional teaming within the Technology, Library, and Innovation departments and collaborates with them to help meet divisional technology needs.
  • Assists in the preparation and monitoring of the operational budget for the Technology, Library, and Innovation Department for the purpose of tracking expenditures.
  • Supervises media center volunteers in the performance of their duties.
  • Maintains professional competence professional growth and development that are both self selected and offered schoolwide.
  • Attends regular meetings with the Director of Technology Integration and Innovation.
  • Participate in all required department, divisional, or all-school meetings.
  • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Technology Integration and Innovation or the Division Head.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Must have extensive knowledge and understanding of the concepts, principles, and methodologies of teaching and learning and of current practices in library media services.
  • Must have extensive knowledge and understanding of the concepts, principles and methodologies derived from the AASL and ISTE standards including becoming an empowered learner, digital citizen, knowledge constructor, innovative designer, computational thinker, creative communicator and global collaborator.
  • Must possess the ability to develop instructional goals for Lower school students; to manage print, non-print, and electronic collection of curriculum support materials and equipment; to provide work direction to others; to collaborate with other instructional personnel; to communicate instructional goals to others effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Proven ability to encourage student discovery and autonomy of thought.
  • Classroom management experience.
  • Proven ability to facilitate differentiated, student-centered best practices.
  • Proven ability to develop teaching units in conjunction with colleagues.
  • Possess a sound understanding of the intellectual and social-emotional developmental stages of early and middle childhood.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to constructively collaborate with colleagues.
  • Capacity to be proficient in culturally responsive pedagogical practices that incorporate diverse and multiple perspectives, including but not limited to Teaching Tolerance Social Justice Standards and the Asia Society Global Competence standards.
  • Demonstrated initiative and savviness in cross-cultural competence, ability to value, work within, interact with, and incorporate diverse and multiple perspectives.  Ability to negotiate and facilitate a shared understanding and common goals across cultural differences in a professional setting.
