Library Director, Witherle Memorial Library, Castine, MA (CLOSED)

Description:

A salaried administrative position of 36.5 hours per week / 52 weeks per year appointed by and responsible to the Board of Library Trustees.

Qualifications:

The Library Director shall hold M.L.I.S degree or its equivalent from an accredited graduate program. Experience relevant to the management of a library is preferred.

Responsibilities:

The Library Director is responsible for the administration and operation of the library.

  1. Implements all policies established by the Board.
  2. Oversees all library operations, systems, and services
  3. Selects, trains, evaluates, schedules, and generally supervises all employees and volunteers in the library.
  4. Selects books and other materials and sees that they are prepared and maintained for public use. Oversees
    regular culling of the library collection.
  5. Maintains awareness of standards and developments in library service and recommends changes in policy
    and procedures to the Board.
  6. Ensures that the highest possible level of reference and information service is provided to library users.
  7. Supervises online resources and services: public service and library technical systems, appropriate policy
    and procedures, staff training, patron orientation.
  8. Is responsible for library correspondence, statistics, and reports. Keeps accounts of operating expenditures
    during the year. Prepares annual operating budget for Board consideration. Prepares annual report to the
    Town (with the Chair of the Trustees) and annual statistical report to State Library. Provides monthly
    reports to the board on the state of the library.
  9. Recommends needed maintenance and improvements of the library building and grounds.
  10. Plans and evaluates programs in the library and in cooperation with other community agencies. Coordinates
    all library publicity and public relations. Serves as a non-voting member of the executive board of Friends
    of the Library.
  11. Works with regional and statewide organizations and with other local libraries to develop services of benefit
    to Castine area residents.
  12. Position requires the Director to work occasional Saturdays and after hours.
  13. Works effectively with the Town Office and other town agencies.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned by the Board of Library Trustees.

Compensation and benefits:

  • Annual salary $55,000 plus benefits
  • Paid work week: 36.5 hours
  • Benefits: 6% town contribution to ICMA retirement fund, paid personal medical insurance through Town of Castine, paid vacation based on the Town of Castine benefits
