Youth Services Librarian, Town of Mansfield, Mansfield, MA

The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for providing excellent library service to children of all ages and their caregivers. This position is responsible for planning and implementing children’s programs, collection development, supporting local school curriculum, providing reference and circulation services to children and caregivers, and assisting patrons with technology.

This is a full-time position, 36 hours a week. Starting at $25.29 per hour, salary may vary based experience in an equivalent role. Works under the general supervision of the Library Director. Supervises the staff of the Children’s department.

Essential Functions:

  • Plans, organizes, directs, and implements programs and activities for children at the library.
  • Provides reference and reader advisory services for children, caregivers, teachers, and community organizations; develops and maintains materials and collection for children.
  • Provides excellent professional services by assisting patrons with information retrieval, location of materials, use of computers and databases.
  • Responsible for maintaining a welcoming and inviting physical and virtual library environment for children that supports learning and recreational activities.
  • Provides monthly and annual statistics on use of resources, programs and reference questions to the Director.
  • Assists, as needed, in the performance of all procedures relating to library services and library organization.
  • Supervises and manages the children’s area of the library website. Keeps informed of web resources for children. Maintains an active online presence through our website and social media.
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school with a concentration in Children’s Services and a minimum of three years’ library experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must be able to prioritize and focus in a busy environment while being able to work cooperatively with the public, volunteers, staff, and other departments, on approaches to service. Excellent customer service and oral/written communication skills. Should have a thorough knowledge of children’s literature and a high level of skill in creating, developing, executing, and evaluating compelling programs for children to communicate and inspire young readers. The ability to integrate emerging technologies into traditional children’s services, along with marketing skills and grant writing skills, is highly desirable.
