Serials Intern, Boston Athenæum, Boston, MA

Essential Job Functions:

The Boston Athenæum seeks a motivated intern for the Technical Services Department who will play an important role in maintaining accurate information relative to the Library’s serials holdings. The ideal candidate will be hard-working, organized, ambitious, and must be currently enrolled in a library science graduate program.

Flexible schedule, about 15 hours per week. Compensation is $14 per hour; paid sick time; free membership concurrent with employment and one year following the date of departure; no other benefits.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs serials check-in through the Voyager ILS
  • Identifies and claims missing periodical issues
  • Maintains organization of back issues of serials
  • Prepares and processes serials bindery shipments
  • Shelving and shifting of materials as required
  • Performs end-processing of new circulation books
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Interacts with members and staff in a professional, friendly manner, fielding inquiries and assisting in locating materials

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Submit to and pass background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment verifications and Department of Motor Vehicles (if applicable)
  • Must be currently enrolled in a library science graduate program
  • Must be detail oriented and able to work independently
  • Must have some flexibility in scheduling
  • Must be able to lift forty pounds
