LIS 512 Archival Field Experience, Abraham Pollen Archives, Massachusetts Eye and Ear

Massachusetts Eye and Ear’s Abraham Pollen Archives seeks an LIS 512 student for an unpaid internship. The Abraham Pollen Archives contains the historical records and papers of the hospital (which was founded in 1824), as well as records and artifacts related to the history of ophthalmology and otolaryngology. Highlights of the collection include the papers of leading figures in the history of ophthalmology and otolaryngology, Annual Reports dating from the 1800s to the present, many old case reports, nursing logbooks, an extensive photograph collection, a medical instrument collection, and other hospital records.

This internship provides the student with the opportunity to gain valuable archives management experience in a unique medical archives. The student will be able to collaborate with the Archivist and Library Director to shape their field experience. Examples of current opportunities include processing records for the New England Ophthalmological Society (NEOS) Papers, processing and digitizing portions of our photograph collection, assisting in the survey and rehousing of the medical instrument collection, and researching and writing content for an ongoing project to share the hospital’s history and highlight diversity in our collections.

Mass Eye and Ear takes the health and safety of its employees seriously. The student will be expected to work on site, where masks and hand sanitizer will be provided and social distancing procedures are in place.

Requirements:

  • Current Archives Management MLIS student.
  • Must have completed at least LIS 438 – Introduction to Archival Methods and Services.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently.
