Providence Community Library is seeking a Collections Management/Adult Services Librarian L-1, who will work in the Collections Management department and Knight Memorial reference desk.

Collections Management:

The Collections Management function of the position includes maintaining the operations of Collection Management Services (CMS) which is responsible for the acquisition, cataloging, processing, deaccessioning, and inventory of library materials. They take primary responsibility for bibliographic functions in the network database and has primary responsibility for original and copy cataloging in accordance with professional standards. As assigned by the Systems Coordinator for Collection Development, supports library managers, adult services librarians, and youth services librarians in carrying out planned collection development projects, including diversity audits, thematic glades for picture books, effective weeding, and other innovative methods to increase relevance and circulation of PCL’s collections.

Responsible for training CMS staff and for overseeing the daily operations of the department. Is acquainted with developments in the library and information science field, attends conferences, meetings and participates in continuing education. Keeps apprised of information technology and its application. Assumes the duties of other staff members in their absence or in unusual situations.

Reference Desk:

As public-facing Adult Services Librarian, provides a full range of information services to patrons of all ages in person, and by phone, email, and chat. Responds to reference and reader’s advisory questions. Helps patrons locate information and materials and use related technology. Instructs patrons in the use of the full range of library technology. Promotes library services and presents programs both in and outside of the library.

Duties:

  • Creates original cataloging and upgrades copy catalog records, particularly for items involving complex or unusual entries.
  • Classifies all non-fiction items, and/or oversees materials classification by other PCL librarians.
  • Catalogs non-English materials; creates bibliographic records for and catalogs circulating equipment and realia.
  • Assists in the maintenance and operation of the library’s automation system, including the creation and editing of bibliographic records.
  • Communicates with vendors when changing processing requirements.
  • Serves on library committees, including PCL’s Collection Development Team.
  • Participates in cataloging, archiving, and metadata projects as needed.
  • Helps develop and administers the Collection Management annual budget, monitors expenditures and makes budget recommendations and adjustments as needed. Collaborates with the Acquisitions Specialist to implement monthly monitoring and reporting of the PCL book budget, including funds received, balances, and special funds.
  • Directs day-to-day workflow of the CMS staff, including volunteers.
  • Approves bi-weekly timesheets.
  • Responsible for scheduling and arranging coverage, including planned and short notice absences.
  • Prepares and presents in-service training programs for other professional staff.
  • Works regular shifts on the reference desk assisting patrons with ready reference, detailed research, reader’s advisory, and digital reference services using both electronic and print sources.
  • Delivers successful customer service and impactful programs by responding to community needs.
  • Collaborates with other staff and library safety ambassador to promote positive behaviors, to maintain order, and to create a welcoming library environment.
  • Assigns and monitors work of volunteers, work study students and high school interns.
  • Provides coverage in other libraries as required.

Requirements:

  • MLS from ALA-accredited program.
  • Original and copy cataloging experience, or course work.
  • Experience with collection development.
  • Experience with an online integrated library system, preferably Sierra.
  • Experience with cataloging tools such as OCLC, USMARC, RDA, DDC, AACR2, bibliographic formats and standards, and authority files.
  • Experience providing programs and adult services in a public library. Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus.
