Part-time Evening Circulation Assistant, New England Law, Boston, MA

Responsibilities include overseeing the circulation desk in the evening; supervising one student desk assistant; communicating law library policies to patrons; and checking in and out library materials.  Essential is a strong customer service orientation, and the ability to interact with patrons in a pleasant and helpful manner in all aspects of work.  Additional duties may include reshelving and assisting with physical processing of interlibrary loan materials.  The library is committed to ensuring a safe environment for staff and patrons which includes social distancing, face coverings, and frequent cleaning.

Schedule:

Part Time, 22 hours per week, Monday through Thursday.  This is a new position and is being advertised as temporary for this academic year (through May 31, 2021).

Supervision:

Works under the direct supervision of the Director of the Law Library.  This job has limited supervisory responsibilities over student work staff.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the circulation desk area in the evenings with the assistance of one student employee.  
  • Provide customer service to library users in a courteous and professional manner answering general and directional questions for patrons and referring more complex research questions to librarians.
  • Explain and implement library policies and procedures . 
  • Check library materials in and out and renew items using the Sierra circulation system.  Follow closing procedures for keeping the circulation desk area orderly.
  • Ensure the confidentiality and privacy of library records.
  • Help maintain the reserve collection and course reserve material.
  • Serve as backup at the Circulation Desk when student desk assistant is absent.
  • Assist the Director of the Law Library and the Library Administrative Assistant in scheduling of students
  • Perform other duties as necessary, including annual projects, reshelving, and physical processing of interlibrary loans.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Some previous library experience and familiarity with an ILS, preferably Sierra or Millennium.  
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills (demonstrated in prior employment).
  • Knowledge and experience working with technology and willingness to learn new technology.
  • Ability to work as part of the library team and communicate effectively and courteously with library staff and patrons.  Ability to communicate effectively with other departments as necessary including building maintenance and security. 
  • Ability to handle patron interactions including communication of library policy in a pleasant and helpful manner.  
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently.  
  • Ability to provide punctual and reliable attendance.
