Library Assistant II – Youth Services, Portsmouth Public Library, NH

Description:

This purpose of this position is to perform library support services in one of more of the following departments: circulation, youth, reference and special collections, and technical services. This position is responsible for independent and collaborative efficient customer access to needed information and materials through extensive customer contact, using all customer service functions of the library’s automated library system software. Complete tasks requiring proficiency and experience using office productivity software, the Internet and some technology devices; may include instructing patrons and/or staff. Assist with collection maintenance, youth and teen program planning and delivery, and the library’s public relations and marketing initiatives and create a welcoming, warm and respectful environment for library patrons and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Utilize the library’s integrated library system software, especially the circulation module, to answer patron questions, update records, place holds for items and more.
  • Assist patrons with finding reading and other library materials. Make recommendations within the collection.
  • Assist patrons with using the library’s online catalogs.
  • Assist patrons with use of technology tools including public computers, self-check stations, printers, iPads and more.
  • Assist with collection maintenance including weeding, keeping collections and displays neat, clean and well organized.
  • Keep usage statistics on a daily basis.
  • Adopt a connected learning approach to presenting programs, classes and events for and with teens so that they educate, inform and inspire.
  • Answer phone calls and respond to patron inquiries.
  • Enter and edit records in the library’s calendar and room management software, EventKeeper.
  • Participate in outreach activities.
  • Assist with training of library pages.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have graduated from high school or have earned a graduate equivalent diploma (GED).
  • Must have a demonstrated interest in library or related customer service work.
  • He/she should have familiarity with office productivity software and a demonstrated ability to use computers, the Internet, and some mobile technologies.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledgeable about issues related to child development including developmental, recreational and educational needs of adolescents.
  • Working knowledge of standard library procedures, current information technology, Internet and database search capabilities.
  • Proficiency using information technology in assigned functions.
  • Ability to provide assistance in locating relevant print, media and other materials to meet the intellectual, business, academic, cultural and entertainment needs of customers.
  • Strong personal example to provide a high level of service to customers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with customers, co-workers, employees in other municipal departments and City officials. This includes good listening skills as well.
  • Ability to design, develop and implement story times, youth and teen programs, workshops and book discussions.
  • Familiarity with best practices in teen services as outlined by ALA, YALSA and other recognized organizations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing skills development and the judgment and public relations skills to deal appropriately with people.
