The Lewiston Public Library is seeking an energetic, enthusiastic, and creative full time Children’s Librarian. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department and is a member of the Library’s leadership and management team.

This is a full-time 37.5 hours a week position. Hours vary- some evenings and Saturdays required. Pay is $24.09/hour.

Work Activities:

The Children’s Librarian reports to the Library Director and supervises full and part time staff and volunteers in the Children’s Room. This position works with department employees to assess the literacy and information needs of local children, parents, elementary and middle schools, and community organizations; overseeing planning and implementation of programs and services to meet those needs. Additional major duties include working at the public services desk assisting users of all ages in using the library, providing reader’s advisory services to children and parent, collaborating with school, childcare facilities and other local agencies. As the head of the Children’s Department, this position participates in strategic planning, tracks departmental budgetary expenditures, and is responsible for the collection development and general organization of children’s library materials.

Education and Experience:

  • A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science and a minimum three (3) years management or related experience is strongly preferred, but equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • The ideal candidate will be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team and be familiar with website content management systems, social media, and display effective time management.
  • Applicants should have a thorough understanding of childhood developmental stages and maintain a professional understanding of new programs, trends, and technologies useful for delivering information, services and resources to users of the Library Children’s Room.
