Public Health Librarian, Loyola University Chicago, Chicago, IL


Loyola University Chicago (Loyola) seeks nominations and applications to identify user-focused, collaborative, and forward-thinking candidates for the position of Public Health Librarian. This position will serve as library liaison for undergraduate programs in the Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health (PSHSPH) and other selected academic departments and programs; provide cross-disciplinary support for quantitative and geospatially-informed teaching and scholarship; develop, deliver, and assess instruction and other information literacy initiatives; consult with and provide support for student and faculty researchers throughout the research lifecycle; and identify, acquire, and promote scholarly resources to support curricular and research needs. This position also supports general research and learning needs of the university, including information literacy instruction for first year students, and participates in other library programming and information services. This is a non-tenured library faculty position with opportunities for promotion. The successful candidate will be based on the Lake Shore campus in Rogers Park, but with responsibilities on both the Lake Shore and Water Tower campuses. Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to Head of Research and Learning Services, the Public Health Librarian will

• Serve as the main point of contact between the University Libraries and undergraduate programs in the Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health and other selected departments and programs. Coordinate and collaborate with the Loyola University Health Sciences Library on the delivery of collections, services, and expertise to support pre-clinical education and Loyola’s public health curriculum.

• Serve as the main point of contact between the University Libraries and the graduate certificate program in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the Institute for Environmental Sustainability (IES). Provide data, GIS, and statistical analysis support, through consultations and instruction, including skills-building workshops for faculty, students, staff, and others.

• Work with PSHSPH and IES faculty to develop course-integrated instruction and other curriculum-based information literacy initiatives that promote the effective and ethical use of information resources.

• Collaborate with faculty and other stakeholders to identify and acquire scholarly resources to support the curricular and research needs of faculty, students, and staff.

• Provide subject-specific research consultations and guidance on copyright, data management, and other scholarly communication issues.

• Apply knowledge of the principles of evidence-based practice and the framework for information literacy to provide training and support to faculty and students engaged in literature searches, evidence reviews, and syntheses.

• Contribute to Research and Learning Department projects and initiatives, including creation of research guides and instructional materials, development of library discovery tools and platforms, and maintenance of the Reference Collection.

• Participate in staffing information service desks and services, as needed.

• Provide library and information literacy instruction for university programs including first year writing, honors program, and undergraduate research program.

• Take initiative and work both autonomously and collaboratively to meet strategic goals, while consistently promoting teamwork, respect, diversity, and inclusiveness.

• Participate in library and university committee work.

• Actively contribute to the broader profession through scholarship and service.

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library and information science program or in a relevant discipline or professional area.

• Proficiency with geospatial analysis using GIS tools such as ArcGIS, GeoDa, or QGIS.

• Experience with visual analytics and data visualization.

• Interest in current research and pedagogical practices in STEM fields.

• Effective interpersonal and communication skills.

• Commitment to equity, shared responsibility, and accountability.

Preferred qualifications:

Additional advanced degree in a STEM field or demonstrated subject knowledge and familiarity with the research methodologies of one or more STEM disciplines.

• Proficiency with quantitative analysis using statistical software such as SPSS, SAS, or Stata and/or programming languages such as R or Python.

• Experience collaborating with evidence synthesis team.

• Familiarity with PubMed and CINAHL.

• Work experience providing library instruction, research support, and/or collection development services.

• Knowledge of research data management policies and practices.

• Demonstrated ability to work with students from a variety of backgrounds.
