The Assistant Director forms productive relationships and partnerships with community leaders, patrons, performers, donors, and libraries in Massachusetts. The Assistant Director supports the Director in transforming big ideas into strategic results-driven initiatives by recruiting, developing, and motivating an outstanding staff; by evaluating and delegating projects appropriately; by promoting inclusion and diversity; and by effectively communicating the Library’s mission, goals, and objectives to the broader Wellesley community.

Job Functions:

  • Oversees the operations of the Circulation, Reference, Children’s and Technical Services of the WFL, ensuring that all staffing and routine library operations are being addressed. Addresses employee concerns and complaints and resolves problems; facilitates information sharing, communication, and collaboration among Library staff.
  • Maintains a high level of visibility with staff, patrons, other Town departments and local organizations to ensure effective communication and satisfaction of public needs; handles complaints; and represents the library in joint activities with other Town departments as assigned by the Director.
  • Drafts position descriptions, estimates personnel needs, participates in interviewing prospective employees and makes hiring recommendations to the Director. Monitors and evaluates staff performance providing feedback as appropriate; and makes staffing recommendations to the Library Director. Handles routine personnel and budget expenditure issues in the Circulation, Reference, Children’s and Technical Services Departments.
  • Consults with the Library Director regarding collection development, allocation of the book budget and creation of the Library’s Materials Collection Plan.
  • Monitors the expenditures of the operating budgets for the Circulation, Reference, Children’s and Technical Services Departments.
  • Assists the Library Director in developing Departmental goals and objectives and in disseminating information to staff regarding Departmental programs, plans, and services. Keeps the Library Director fully informed of Department activities and operations.
  • Coordinates the Library’s volunteer program.
  • Plans general interest Library programs and provides guidance and support to employees who plan and publicize Library programs.
  • Demonstrates an ongoing commitment to continued professional development by attending professional meetings, reading professional literature, and/or taking courses in library and library related subjects.
  • Represents the Library at community events and professional meetings.
  • Attends Trustees’ meetings, may record minutes. Reports on projects and activities as required.
  • Performs special projects, related responsibilities and other duties as required and/or assigned.
  • Acts as the Library Director in his/her absence

Minimum Qualifications:

  •  Master’s degree in Library and Information Science and five years of progressively responsible experience in library operations, including supervisory experience. 
  •  Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills. Ability to deal effectively with all members of the public in a courteous and tactful manner and the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers. 
  •  Skills in strategic planning, developing staff competencies, and building high performance teams; knowledge and skill in managing personnel matters, including taking corrective actions to resolve performance and/or compliance matters.  
  • Thorough working knowledge of library principles and procedures; familiarity with automated library systems, collections of both print and non-print resources, current and emerging technologies; a strong service orientation and the ability to design, implement, and evaluate patron-centric programs and services.  
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deal effectively with interruptions; ability to identify and analyze complex issues and to develop appropriate recommendations; excellent attention to detail.
  •   Ability to work calmly, diplomatically and accurately in high pressure situations. 
  •  Strong conflict resolution, informed judgment and problem solving skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Other Information:

The work schedule is typically M-F and will include evenings or weekends, as needed. Anticipated hiring range is $67,930 – $85,990, DOQ, with excellent benefits (health and dental insurance, vacation, sick time, retirement plan).
