Neuro- and Health Sciences Librarian, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN

The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries seek a creative and innovative librarian to liaise with the students and faculty in several neuro- and health related academic units on the Bloomington Campus: Cognitive Sciences, Optometry and Vision Science, Nursing, Psychological and Brain Sciences, and Speech and Hearing Sciences.  The person in this position will serve as a primary contact and resource for these constituencies and will work in close collaboration with library and campus colleagues to support research, teaching, and learning needs.

 

This position reports to the Libraries’ Head of Sciences department.  This department includes four librarians who are responsible for research and learning support services across multiple locations.  The successful candidate will join a department that embraces innovation and new services in partnership with campus academic centers and institutes, various IT departments, and colleagues across the Libraries, particularly in the Research Data, Scholarly Communication, and Social Sciences areas.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide comprehensive and specialized instructional, research, and collections support at all educational levels and across information formats.
  • Provide advanced consultation and search services for narrative and scoping reviews and other literature intensive research projects.
  • Develop and build print and electronic collections that meet user needs.
  • Continually learn and understand the evolving research practices and teaching needs in order to engage constituents with spaces, services, and collections.
  • Proactively develop and manage relationships with constituents in order to anticipate and meet needs
  • Assist in the development and actualization of researchers’ data management plans using institutional and community best practices.
  • Support federal public access policy compliance.
  • With colleagues, participate in understanding research data service needs and the development of outreach and training strategies.
  • Explore and keep abreast of changing technologies and their application in neuro and health sciences, such as: 3D Virtual Reality, GIS, data visualization, curation and preservation of information, citation impact, and the semantic web.
  • Provide responsive, quality teaching and learning services, including the development and execution of instruction programs focused on advanced resources for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Collaborate in programming and engagement activities with librarian colleagues to share research experience and expertise.
  • Support scholarly communication, data management, and open access initiatives in collaboration with campus and library colleagues
  • Actively participate in the Libraries’ Assessment program in order to provide responsive services to faculty and students.
  • Contribute to developments in the field of librarianship through active professional engagement and independent scholarship consistent with a library faculty appointment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science and either experience or a degree in a neuro- or health related field.  Candidates with an advanced degree in a relevant academic field and appropriate experience in an academic setting are also strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated experience in instruction and research consultation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of disciplinary terminology and familiarity with the latest methods used in neuro- and health-related research.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate on projects and initiatives, particularly outside of the discipline to educate and deliver.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong commitment to public services and improving the library user experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to set and attain goals and the flexibility to adapt to change

Preferred

  • Demonstrated experience creating and sustaining new library services.
  • Knowledge of health and life sciences databases (e.g., record structure, indexing policies), thorough knowledge of search interfaces, and excellent database and grey literature search experience.
  • Knowledge of traditional and alternative research impact tools.
  • Experience with health communications, neuro- and/or health literature, and/or health sciences outreach.
  • Experience with book and journal selection and/or licensing.
  • Familiarity with systematic review search methodology, guidelines, and standards.
  • Familiarity with data visualization skills.
  • Experience with MyNCBI Services.
  • Knowledge of metadata standards.
  • Knowledge of subject-specific repositories.
  • Familiarity with the NIH and NSF grant processes.
  • In-depth knowledge of the publication process in the sciences.
