Director of Library Services, New England Conservatory, Boston, MA

Job Summary
The primary responsibility of the Director of Library Services is to oversee and manage the organization and operation of the Blumenthal Family Library. This individual reports to the Vice President & Provost.

 

Essential Functions

  • Develop policies for the circulation of library materials in collaboration with the Head of Public Services
  • Develop and implement policy for the Conservatory’s use of archival materials in collaboration with the Archivist/Records Manager
  • Develop and oversee reference and instructional programs for the use of library resources; participate in classes, as required
  • Serve on NEC’s DMA Committee as a voting member and Faculty Council as a non-voting member
  • Evaluate and select electronic databases and internet resources in collaboration with the Collection Management Librarian
  • Develop and manage the library budget, including allocation of collection development funds and operational expenses
  • Oversee all activities related to the digitization of library materials
  • Develop and implement policies regarding the donation of materials to the library; assess donated materials to determine alignment with the needs of the collection; work together with Advancement staff in donor relations and agreements
  • Oversee the operation and effective use of the library’s integrated library system (Voyager), which is shared by the Fenway Library Organization (FLO) consortium; serve on the Board of Directors of FLO
  • Serve as the Conservatory’s representative to Boston Area Music Libraries, Massachusetts Library System, and other organizations
  • Coordinate with Building Operations staff on library needs
  • Hire, train, and manage three direct reports: Head of Cataloging and Electronic Resource Management; Head of Public Services; and Archivist/Records Manager
  • Give direction and provide feedback to all library staff (9 FTE); conduct regular performance evaluations of direct reports
  • Set departmental goals and establish work priorities
  • Collaborate with faculty, students, and staff to inform collection strategy and enhance learning technologies
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library Science, or an equivalent, from an ALA-accredited institution required
  • Master’s degree in Musicology required; doctoral degree preferred
  • Minimum of five years of management/supervisory experience in a music library setting
  • Thorough knowledge of automated library systems and electronic resources
  • Successful experience in teaching and bibliographic instruction
  • Knowledge of the organization and administration of library archives
  • Effective oral and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to set and balance priorities and manage competing deadlines; have strong analytical and problem-solving skills
